Background of the Study
Social support is widely recognized as a critical determinant of psychological resilience, particularly among vulnerable populations such as widows. In Ikom, widows frequently face social isolation, economic hardships, and emotional distress following the loss of their partners (Nkem, 2023). Research indicates that robust support networks can significantly enhance coping strategies and foster resilience in the face of adversity (Udo, 2024). The role of family, community, and institutional support is crucial in mitigating the psychological impact of bereavement. In many cases, widows rely on informal networks and community-based organizations to navigate their new realities (Oma, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted nature of social support and its direct correlation with psychological resilience among widows. It explores how various dimensions of support, including emotional, informational, and financial assistance, contribute to improved mental health outcomes. By critically evaluating these support systems, the research aims to identify best practices and develop recommendations that could enhance resilience and overall well-being among widows in Ikom.
Statement of the Problem
Widows in Ikom experience significant psychological challenges due to social isolation and economic insecurity. The lack of consistent and structured social support exacerbates their vulnerability, resulting in diminished resilience and heightened stress levels. Despite the existence of informal networks, many widows do not receive adequate emotional and financial support to cope effectively with their loss. This gap in support systems calls for a thorough investigation into the influence of social support on psychological resilience, with the aim of identifying strategies that can improve mental health outcomes (Nkem, 2023).
